Skills Training and Group Counselling
A recent session with caregivers of children with special needs.
During a recent session with caregivers of children with special needs, three key activities were conducted.
The first activity was a group counseling session, where caregivers openly shared their lived experiences. A major theme that emerged was the persistent stigma they face at multiple levels, including within families, churches, and schools. This stigma continues to negatively affect both the caregivers and their children, limiting social support and inclusion.
Additionally, many caregivers reported significant economic challenges. A majority indicated that they are unable to engage in income generating activities because they must provide full-time care for their children, as there are limited or no alternative caregiving options available.
Access to essential services also emerged as a major concern. Caregivers highlighted barriers such as high costs and limited availability of services, including ongoing physiotherapy and psychological assessments. As a result, many children are unable to receive the consistent support they require for their development and well-being.
The second activity focused on caregiver empowerment through practical skills training. The caregivers selected handwash soap making as their first skill to learn. This choice was informed by its simplicity, affordability, and the availability of a ready market. Additionally, the activity can be carried out from home, making it suitable for caregivers who need to remain close to their children. The caregivers expressed hope that this skill will enable them to generate income within a short period of time and improve their household livelihoods.
The session concluded with the sharing of stress management techniques aimed at nurturing caregivers' emotional well-being. These techniques emphasized the importance of self-care, peer support, and practical coping strategies to help caregivers manage the emotional demands associated with their roles.
